Accommodation suppliers urged to halt demanding deposit from NSFAS funded students



The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords never to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes immediately after NSFAS been given experiences about some accommodation companies who demand NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment in order to get entry to the authorized private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation vendors in the obligatory conditions, as provided by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Arrangement in between the non-public accommodation vendors and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS reported in a statement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states that the rent is going to be paid out regular monthly into the accommodation service provider (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance using the NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not need or allow the lessee to pay for a deposit, top-up payments, or another sorts of payment on the lessor, or every other person in reference to this agreement, like payment of hire, though awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall don't have any recourse against the lessee for any default during the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement click here reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded resulting from an incorrect selection by NSFAS, the coed won't be liable for payment of any click here arrear rent on the accommodation provider, up right until the date of being defunded."

NSFAS discussed that in which the NSFAS-funded student chooses to carry on occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding getting defunded by NSFAS, the scholar will be nsfas application delay responsible for payment of hire towards the lessor with the day of currently being defunded.

The scheme emphasised that any dispute arising between the parties regarding the interpretation or implementation nsfas eligibility criteria of the agreement, must be dealt with in accordance with any dispute resolution procedure determined by NSFAS for this purpose.
